Dear reader,
As some of you recall, my inktober project for 2024 was to create a zine over the course of the month. I felt like I was letting myself off easy with this, I mean, how hard can it be to fill eight teeny tiny pages?
It was both harder and easier than I expected. I originally panicked about drawing so small, drawing on such thin paper, and creating an actual finished product (instead of an ongoing fun zone like my illustrated journal).
It turns out that I had the hardest time trying to figure out what exactly to put in the zine. I also clearly let myself forget all of the low-tech technology of my formative years. I spent a ton of time as a teen creating wacky hand made collages for the inserts of mix tapes. My first year teaching journalism, we literally cut and pasted the paper together.
I am pretty pleased with how it came out. I do need to work on better margins, for easier printing. If you plan to print I found that the best results came from printing at 100%, even if that means the edges are cut off a little.
I am in an on again, off again relationship with my printer, so I made a little gallery here with photos of the assembled zine for anyone that can’t print it themselves.

Here is the pdf for anyone who would like to print and fold their own.
Here is a set of folding instructions:

I would encourage all of you to try a zine, if you haven’t already. I had a lot of fun and it is so easy to swap and collect online. (If anyone really wants a hard copy, reach out to me and I will mail you one)
All the best, Laura
The topic is fabulous too. It’s funny because I had a reaction to the gas mask & then read your summary. 🙂
I love this!! I’d love to have it in my holiday zine pop up 😍 I also really love showing the print & the instructions— I will borrow those helpful ideas from to you. 🙏🏽
